I'm starting out the new year with a cold and am feeling pretty miserable today, so I'm going to keep this short.
I just wanted to note the passing today of the former Senator from Rhode Island, Claiborne Pell. The Senator was a champion for education during his six terms in the Senate and sponsored the legislation that created Pell Grants for college students. He was also a force in the Senate behind the legislation that created the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
On top of all of that, he was adamantly opposed to the Vietnam War. We could sure use more people like him serving in the Senate today.
