I just saw the news that E. Lynn Harris, the openly gay writer who wrote several novels about gay African American characters, has died suddenly at the all too young age of 54.
I haven't yet read any of the novels Harris wrote, but I did read his memoir, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, a few years back. It was actually assigned reading in a Gay & Lesbian History class I took and I found his story to be very moving.
It's always tragic when anyone dies before their time. You can't help but think of all the books he had yet to write. The silencing of a strong African American voice in gay fiction is especially sad.
Rest in peace, Mr. Harris.
