Today voters in Houston Texas, the fourth largest city in the United States, elected out lesbian Annise Parker as Mayor, becoming the biggest city in the country to ever by lead by someone who was openly gay.
The new Mayor-elect won with 53.6% in a runoff election that saw religious groups and conservatives rallying around her opponent and launching homophobic attacks to try and sway the election.
Luckily, hatred and bigotry did not carry the day this time around! I look forward to the day when openly LGBT people being elected to office is so commonplace that it isn't even news and this is definitely another victory along that road.
