I'm in Shock

I'm completely reeling from the news that One Life to Live is writing off Oliver and Kyle. Scott Evans and Brett Claywell will be off the air by mid April, according to Michael Fairman.

It makes no sense to me at all. I'm just completely stunned. If the show had been treating the characters like second class citizens, I wouldn't be as floored as I am. If ATWT wrote off Nuke, for instance, I could say "Well, they didn't know how to write for them anyway."

Kish has been so well written, though, that I'm left wondering where this decision is even coming from? The couple is popular and there is so much story still to be told with the characters.

Here's what Fairman's article says, though:

"According to the report, even though KISH has been a big success with the media and gay-advocacy groups have shown favor to One Life to Live’s efforts, the ABC Television Network says the duo failed to resonate with the mainstream audience, referencing Fish’s coming out story as one reason for tanking the ratings."

This just feels like such a slap in the face. So, blame the gays. Nice, ABC. Homophobic much?

I loved One Life to Live before Kish, but right now I'm honestly feeling like when they go, I go.

Seth - When I initially saw the article up on TV Guide, I thought it was a mistake. I literally stared at the headline for a minute, before I made myself read the rest of it.

For the ONE soap, that from the very beginning was created to showcase diversity and commonality of people/characters in a small town, all I'm seeing is the complete and total opposite of why it was created and put on the air in the first place. ABCD and the folks running and ruining OLTL and AMC should be ashamed of themselves for what they've done to Agnes Nixon's legacy.

To think that in the early 80's there was more diversity on ALL soaps, then what is currently being shown on screen in 2010.

The word for me that best describes the entire situation is just SHAMEFUL. SHAMEFUL. SHAMEFUL. SHAMEFUL.

I had the same initial reaction. I thought it had to be a mistake.

When I saw Scott's tweet that he was taken by surprise at the news, I was so angry not only that they were letting Brett & Scott go, but that they hadn't even had the decency to tell them before it hit the press!

I actually feel sorry for Ron Carlivati, the head writer, because he's put so much fantastic work into Kish and now the idiots at ABC have sent down the order that they've got to go. It's so ridiculous!

I can't believe they're blaming Kish for the lower ratings out of all the other stories that were airing at the same time. Gee, maybe Rex & Gigi are the issue, or people just don't care about Todd & Tea's long lost daughter. Nope, it must be the gays! Jesus.

I think I'm done with soaps. :(

After what happened with Greg Vaughn/Jonathan Jackson/GH, I'm not at all surprised that Brett and Scott weren't informed of anything. This business doesn't give a shit about their employees. OR the audience. It's all about the money and how many viewers than can TRY to keep. This shit has happened way to many times and it won't be the last.

I can't even imagine what that must be like to deal with the reality that a storyline based on characters who happen to be gay, just isn't acceptable for your "regular viewers". The career that you work in and a career that you busted your ass in getting.

It's like if I wrote a storyline based on two African-American or hell Indian-American characters and then was told that we've got to get rid of them, because their love story just isn't "familiar" with our regular viewers.

Yet, a rapist character can be able to have 2 to 3 women panting over him at one time and that's perfectly acceptable.

You're not alone with that thought. I started watching soaps with my grandmother. Soap viewing is STILL a generational thing. It's passed down through families. It might not be the EXACT way of how viewers watch soaps these days, but it was about a shared experience. You can't share anything now, when you know that you and "your kind" aren't marketable and wanted. I'm not going to watch ANY soap, that's based in the US that doesn't at least try to show diversity in their canvas. It's not like I'm looking for representation, but you can't tell me that in this day and age there's no way to show diversity in a fictionalized daytime serial?!

I'm not trying to rage right now, but this is all just bull shit and to think that things were better in the 80s is just shameful. There were still problems, but all the soaps at that time clearly had more diversity than what's going on now. Yes, they didn't have any GLBT characters, but damn there was more diversity back then.
