Back in the Game

I'm sorry for the two and a half months of silence. Life has been even more hectic than usual since I last wrote. Among other things, I've left my job and moved to a new city. It has certainly been stressful, but I do love the idea of a fresh start!

Now that things are somewhat settled, my hope is that I can once again resume blogging on a regular basis.

I'll just dip my toe in the water tonight by noting that it's that time of year again: Literary Award Season! Lambda Literary has announced the finalists for their 23rd annual prize and the same can be said for the Publishing Triangle Awards. Both of these awards honor LGBT writing and never fail to alert me to a title or an author I might otherwise never have found.

The Orange Prize, meanwhile, honors excellence in women's writing and they've announced a longlist that sounds pretty fascinating.

There are several books on the list that I want to read, though as usual I'm immersed in slightly older works of gay fiction, most recently the wonderful short story collections of Richard Hall and, at the moment, The Young and Evil, a novel about gay/bohemian life in Greenwich Village in the late 1920's by Charles Henri Ford and Parker Tyler.

The truly astounding thing is that the novel was originally published in 1933 but is incredibly upfront about gay life in that time and place without any attempt at moralizing.

I also recently read two very different books published at the same time and dealing with the same themes and settings: Larry Kramer's Faggots and Andrew Holleran's Dancer From the Dance. I read them back to back and I have to say that I found Holleran's novel to be beautifully written but I really didn't care for Kramer's.

That's not to say that it wasn't well written, but there was such an aura of bitterness surrounding it all, not to mention his sheer delight in reveling in the most seamy aspects of gay life, which left me feeling like I needed to take a shower each time I finished a chapter. Reading such a book would leave anyone feeling like being a gay man was a bleak experience at best.

Lest you think that I'm only reading fiction that's at least twenty five years old, I'm counting down the days until the release of Stephen McCauley's latest novel, Insignificant Others, in June and I was also very excited to notice the other day at work that there is now an October release date for Armistead Maupin's new Tales of the City novel, Mary Ann in Autumn!

Lambda Literary Nominees

The finalists for the 22nd Annual Lambda Literary Awards have been announced. Looking over the nominees, I feel excited to see so many titles that I can add to my reading list. I've only read one of them already, Edmund White's City Boy, a memoir of the author's life in New York in the 1960's and 1970's, a book I really enjoyed.

As I've said before, I don't tend to read more than a few brand new titles each year and recently I've been devouring a lot of gay fiction published in the 1970's and 80's. I began reading the Men on Men anthology series last year and many of the wonderful short stories in those books have lead me to the story collections and novels of some very incredible writers I might otherwise have never heard of.

With so many older books still waiting to be discovered, it's daunting to realize that there are this many new ones (and plenty more beyond just these, of course) being published each year! I read more than almost anyone else I know, honestly, and yet I know for a fact even if I somehow managed to live to be 120 I'll die with a stack of books waiting to be read on my bedside table and a long list of titles, old and new, that I'm interested in checking out.

Clearly, I either need to discover the fountain of youth so that I can have an eternity in which to read everything that I'd like to read, or I need to have my own personal Groundhog's Day a la Bill Murray.

Lambda Literary Awards

The Nominees for the 21st Annual Lambda Literary Awards were announced yesterday. Looking over the list, I'm sad to say that I've only read one of the nominees. On the bright side, the picks will add to my own ever growing list of books to read.

The one book I have read is Joseph Olshan's The Conversian, which is nominated for Best Gay Fiction and which I really enjoyed. I found that it spoke to me as a lover of books as much as it did as a gay man, since it had a literary setting and theme.
